AICA International at the 61st Venice Biennale

61. Mezinárodní výstava umění – La Biennale di Venezia se otevírá v napjatém globálním momentu. Svět kolem ní formují válka, vysídlování, cenzura a politické násilí. V takovém klimatu nelze národní reprezentaci považovat za neutrální. Když státy zapojené do války, okupace nebo závažného porušování lidských práv využívají kulturu jako diplomatickou scénu, umění se může stát zástěrkou zakrývající brutalitu. AICA International tuto logiku odmítá. Umělecké prostory by neměly sloužit k vylepšování obrazu vlád, zatímco jsou lidé bombardováni, vysídlováni, vězněni nebo umlčováni. To platí všude. Ruská válka proti Ukrajině, genocida v Gaze páchaná Izraelem i další probíhající konflikty vyžadují jasný postoj. Přesto Bienále zůstává jednou z mála mezinárodních platforem, kde umělecká kritika stále hraje veřejnou roli. Z tohoto důvodu je AICA International přítomna v Benátkách s novou iniciativou ocenění a s členy, kteří pracují napříč několika národními pavilony. AICA International Prize – Artist Award Letos AICA International spouští cenu AICA International Prize – Artist Award. Ocenění je určeno žijícímu umělci účastnícímu se hlavní výstavy, který žije v zemi nezastoupené národním pavilonem. Věříme, že tento formát přesune pozornost od vlajek a státních struktur směrem k praxím, které překračují hranice, jazyky a politické kategorie. Cena zahrnuje: finanční odměnu 6 000 € oficiální prezentaci v Paříži v následujícím roce uznání mezinárodní komunitou kritiků Jedinečnost tohoto ocenění spočívá v tom, že jej udělují všichni členové AICA International, kteří jsou vyzváni hlasovat pro umělce dle vlastního výběru. Hlasovací lístky budou všem členům AICA, kteří uhradili členské příspěvky, rozeslány později v průběhu Bienále.

Albánský pavilon 

Albánský pavilon představuje projekt A Place in the Sun od Gentiho Koriniho. Kurátorka: Małgorzata Ludwisiak, členka AICA. Zahájení: 8. května 2026, 12:30 / 

Arsenale, Sale d'Armi Open CRIT sezení AICA International a AICA UK uspořádají dvě otevřená CRIT sezení vedená Sacha Craddock, prezidentkou AICA UK. Obě sezení budou streamována prostřednictvím Instagramu AICA International. Čtvrtek 7. května – 15:00 Sraz u albánského pavilonu. Poté přesun na hlavní výstavu v Arsenale. Pátek 8. května – 14:00Sraz u bulharského pavilonu. Poté pokračování k blízkým pavilonům. 

Výhled do budoucna Benátky jsou stále důležité, protože koncentrují protiklady na jednom místě: moc, spektákl, inteligenci, oportunismus, odvahu, ješitnost, seriózní umění i prázdná gesta. Členové AICA tam nejsou proto, aby scénu jen dotvářeli, ale aby o ní kriticky přemýšleli. Srdečně vyzýváme všechny členy AICA, kteří budou v Benátkách, aby se připojili k akcím, zapojili se do diskusí a hlasovali o ocenění pro umělce.

The 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia opens in a tense global moment. War, displacement, censorship, and political violence shape the world around it. In that climate, national representation can't be treated as neutral. When states involved in war, occupation, or serious human rights abuses use culture as a diplomatic stage, art can become a screen that hides brutality.AICA International rejects that logic. Art spaces should not be used to polish the image of governments while people are being bombed, displaced, imprisoned, or silenced. This applies everywhere. Russia's war against Ukraine, the genocide in Gaza by Israel, and other ongoing conflicts demand clarity. Yet the Biennale remains one of the few international platforms where art criticism still plays a public role. For that reason, AICA International is present in Venice with a new award initiative and with members working across several national pavilions. AICA International Prize – Artist Award This year AICA International launches the AICA International Prize – Artist Award.The award is for a living artist participating in the main exhibition and residing in a country not represented by a national pavilion. We believe that this formula will shift attention away from flags and state structures toward practices that move across borders, languages, and political categories.The prize includes: €6,000 monetary award Official presentation in Paris the following year Recognition by the international community of critics What makes this award unique is that it is presented by all members of AICA International, who are invited to vote for the artist of their choice.Ballots for all AICA members who paid their fees will be sent later during the Biennale period.

Looking Ahead

Venice still matters because it concentrates contradictions in one place: power, spectacle, intelligence, opportunism, courage, vanity, serious art, empty gestures. AICA members are there not to decorate the scene, but to think through it critically. We warmly encourage all AICA members who will be in Venice to join the events, take part in the discussions, and cast their vote for the Artist Award.

58th AICA International Congress

Symposium: "Art criticism and eco-socially engaged practices: new writing, new challenges?" / Umělecká kritika a eko-sociálně angažované praxe: nové způsoby psaní, nové výzvy?

The 58th Congress of the International Association of Art Critics will take place in Rennes (France) from 12 to 16 October 2026. This event will include, from 13 to 15 October, an international symposium organised by Rennes 2 University, the French National Institute for Art History (INHA) and AICA, the three founding members of the Archives of Art Criticism (ACA).

Entitled "Art criticism and eco-socially engaged practices: new writing, new challenges?", this congress seeks to explore the social, cultural and political functions of contemporary art criticism in light of the evolving relationships between art, society, and politics since the 2000s.

It is intended for researchers in the arts, art history, philosophy, the humanities and social sciences, as well as for artists, critics, curators, and all those in the contemporary art world who, over the past three decades, have been engaged in reflecting on the forms of engagement and the social responsibilities of criticism.

The congress is also open to non-academic forms of communication, such as readings, performances or action-oriented lectures, in order to foster dialogue between critical, artistic and theoretical practices.

Proposals for papers (approximately 2,500 characters, including spaces), together with a short bio-bibliographical note, should be sent in PDF format to                                           aca-direction@univ-rennes2.fr     by 16 February 2026 at the latest. They will be reviewed through a double-blind process by the scientific committee (currently being formed).

58. kongres Mezinárodní asociace výtvarných kritiků (AICA) se uskuteční v Rennes (Francie) ve dnech 12.–16. října 2026. Součástí této akce bude ve dnech 13.–15. října mezinárodní symposium pořádané Univerzitou Rennes 2, Francouzským národním institutem dějin umění (INHA) a AICA, třemi zakládajícími členy Archivů umělecké kritiky (ACA).

Kongres s názvem "Umělecká kritika a ekosociálně angažované praxe: nové formy psaní, nové výzvy?" si klade za cíl zkoumat sociální, kulturní a politické funkce současné umělecké kritiky ve světle proměňujících se vztahů mezi uměním, společností a politikou od počátku 21. století.

Je určen badatelům v oblasti umění, dějin umění, filozofie, humanitních a sociálních věd, stejně jako umělcům, kritikům, kurátorům a všem aktérům současného uměleckého světa, kteří se v posledních třech desetiletích věnují reflexi forem angažovanosti a společenské odpovědnosti kritiky.

Kongres je rovněž otevřen neakademickým formám komunikace, jako jsou čtení, performance či akčně orientované přednášky, s cílem podpořit dialog mezi kritickými, uměleckými a teoretickými praxemi.

Návrhy příspěvků (v rozsahu přibližně 2 500 znaků včetně mezer), spolu s krátkou bio-bibliografickou poznámkou, je třeba zaslat ve formátu PDF na adresu                                aca-direction@univ-rennes2.fr nejpozději do 16. února 2026. Příspěvky budou posuzovány vědeckým výborem (který je v současnosti sestavován) v rámci dvojitě anonymního recenzního řízení.

The Eleventh Edition of the International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC 11) 2025, is open to candidates from anywhere in the world writing in Chinese or English about any contemporary art exhibition held anywhere in the world or on-line in 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025.

New Report Released: The State of Artistic Freedom 2025

Freemuse, in close collaboration with members of AICA, is proud to announce the release of the State of Artistic Freedom 2025 report — a comprehensive, evidence-based investigation into the global threats to artists' rights and cultural expression during 2024.

The report documents alarming patterns of censorship, persecution, and violence against artists across more than 30 countries. It reveals how artists have been silenced for speaking out against war, religion, politics, and inequality — and how, in response, many have shown extraordinary resistance and resilience.

From long-term imprisonment in Egypt and Iran, to cultural censorship in Germany and the USA, to the devastating consequences of war in Gaza and Ukraine, the report highlights how artistic freedom is under unprecedented pressure — even in democratic societies.

Key findings include:

• Increasing use of blasphemy laws, foreign agent legislation, and politically motivated funding restrictions

• Disproportionate targeting of women, LGBTQ+ artists, and minority voices

• Intensifying self-censorship in public institutions and among artists

• Global patterns of repression of satirical, feminist, and anti-war expression

• Rising solidarity movements and grassroots resistance led by artists

The report is both a call to awareness and a call to action: governments, institutions, and civil society must defend artistic expression not only as a human right but as an essential part of democratic life. /

Freemuse v úzké spolupráci s členy AICA s hrdostí oznamuje vydání zprávy Stav umělecké svobody 2025 — komplexního a na důkazech založeného šetření globálních hrozeb pro práva umělců a kulturní vyjádření v roce 2024.

Zpráva dokumentuje znepokojivé vzorce cenzury, pronásledování a násilí vůči umělcům ve více než 30 zemích. Odhaluje, jak byli umělci umlčováni za to, že se vyslovili proti válce, náboženství, politice či nerovnosti — a jak mnozí z nich projevili mimořádnou odolnost a odvahu.

Od dlouhodobého věznění v Egyptě a Íránu, přes kulturní cenzuru v Německu a USA, až po zničující dopady války v Gaze a na Ukrajině – zpráva upozorňuje na bezprecedentní tlak na uměleckou svobodu, a to i v demokratických společnostech.

Klíčová zjištění zahrnují:

• Rostoucí využívání zákonů o rouhání, legislativy o zahraničních agentech a politicky motivovaných omezení financování

• Nepřiměřené cílení na ženy, LGBTQ+ umělce a hlasy menšin
