Symposium: "Art criticism and eco-socially engaged practices: new writing, new challenges?" / Umělecká kritika a eko-sociálně angažované praxe: nové způsoby psaní, nové výzvy?

The 58th Congress of the International Association of Art Critics will take place in Rennes (France) from 12 to 16 October 2026. This event will include, from 13 to 15 October, an international symposium organised by Rennes 2 University, the French National Institute for Art History (INHA) and AICA, the three founding members of the Archives of Art Criticism (ACA).

Entitled "Art criticism and eco-socially engaged practices: new writing, new challenges?", this congress seeks to explore the social, cultural and political functions of contemporary art criticism in light of the evolving relationships between art, society, and politics since the 2000s.

It is intended for researchers in the arts, art history, philosophy, the humanities and social sciences, as well as for artists, critics, curators, and all those in the contemporary art world who, over the past three decades, have been engaged in reflecting on the forms of engagement and the social responsibilities of criticism.

The congress is also open to non-academic forms of communication, such as readings, performances or action-oriented lectures, in order to foster dialogue between critical, artistic and theoretical practices.

Proposals for papers (approximately 2,500 characters, including spaces), together with a short bio-bibliographical note, should be sent in PDF format to                                           aca-direction@univ-rennes2.fr     by 16 February 2026 at the latest. They will be reviewed through a double-blind process by the scientific committee (currently being formed).

58. kongres Mezinárodní asociace výtvarných kritiků (AICA) se uskuteční v Rennes (Francie) ve dnech 12.–16. října 2026. Součástí této akce bude ve dnech 13.–15. října mezinárodní symposium pořádané Univerzitou Rennes 2, Francouzským národním institutem dějin umění (INHA) a AICA, třemi zakládajícími členy Archivů umělecké kritiky (ACA).

Kongres s názvem "Umělecká kritika a ekosociálně angažované praxe: nové formy psaní, nové výzvy?" si klade za cíl zkoumat sociální, kulturní a politické funkce současné umělecké kritiky ve světle proměňujících se vztahů mezi uměním, společností a politikou od počátku 21. století.

Je určen badatelům v oblasti umění, dějin umění, filozofie, humanitních a sociálních věd, stejně jako umělcům, kritikům, kurátorům a všem aktérům současného uměleckého světa, kteří se v posledních třech desetiletích věnují reflexi forem angažovanosti a společenské odpovědnosti kritiky.

Kongres je rovněž otevřen neakademickým formám komunikace, jako jsou čtení, performance či akčně orientované přednášky, s cílem podpořit dialog mezi kritickými, uměleckými a teoretickými praxemi.

Návrhy příspěvků (v rozsahu přibližně 2 500 znaků včetně mezer), spolu s krátkou bio-bibliografickou poznámkou, je třeba zaslat ve formátu PDF na adresu                                aca-direction@univ-rennes2.fr nejpozději do 16. února 2026. Příspěvky budou posuzovány vědeckým výborem (který je v současnosti sestavován) v rámci dvojitě anonymního recenzního řízení.

Jedenáctý ročník Mezinárodních cen za uměleckou kritiku (IAAC 11) 2025 je otevřen kandidátům z celého světa, kteří píší v čínštině nebo angličtině o jakékoli výstavě současného umění konané kdekoli na světě nebo online v období od 1. září 2024 do 31. srpna 2025.  /

The Eleventh Edition of the International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC 11) 2025, is open to candidates from anywhere in the world writing in Chinese or English about any contemporary art exhibition held anywhere in the world or on-line in 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025.

New Report Released: The State of Artistic Freedom 2025

Freemuse, in close collaboration with members of AICA, is proud to announce the release of the State of Artistic Freedom 2025 report — a comprehensive, evidence-based investigation into the global threats to artists' rights and cultural expression during 2024.

The report documents alarming patterns of censorship, persecution, and violence against artists across more than 30 countries. It reveals how artists have been silenced for speaking out against war, religion, politics, and inequality — and how, in response, many have shown extraordinary resistance and resilience.

From long-term imprisonment in Egypt and Iran, to cultural censorship in Germany and the USA, to the devastating consequences of war in Gaza and Ukraine, the report highlights how artistic freedom is under unprecedented pressure — even in democratic societies.

Key findings include:

• Increasing use of blasphemy laws, foreign agent legislation, and politically motivated funding restrictions

• Disproportionate targeting of women, LGBTQ+ artists, and minority voices

• Intensifying self-censorship in public institutions and among artists

• Global patterns of repression of satirical, feminist, and anti-war expression

• Rising solidarity movements and grassroots resistance led by artists

The report is both a call to awareness and a call to action: governments, institutions, and civil society must defend artistic expression not only as a human right but as an essential part of democratic life.
